INDIANAPOLIS - 2008 NCAA DII Cross Country champion Scott Bauhs has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning the Synaptics Elite Athlete 5 km Thursday in San Jose, Calif. In his first race as a professional, Bauhs tied the course record, covering the 5 km course in 13 minutes 37 seconds. It is the fastest time by an American for 5 km on the road this year. read more...

With a little revenge in mind, Marco’s Craig Carlson raced and won while completing his 100th triathlon. The triathlon in Clearwater was a sprint, where competitors swam a half mile, rode 12 miles on a bike and finished with a 3.1-mile run. He won his age class, 70-74 and garnered a little revenge at the same time. His triathlon time was 1:23. read more...

Dwayne Miller, who coached LaShawn Merritt to two gold medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, has been named the 2008 Nike Coach of the Year by USA Track & Field. Miller will be honored on Saturday, December 6 at the Jesse Owens Awards and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremon, held in conjunction with USA Track & Field's 2008 Annual Meeting. Merritt dominated the men's 400 meters at the Olympic Games, winning the event in a world-leading and personal best 43.75. Merritt also ran the lead-off leg for the men's 4x400m relay that brought home the gold medal in an Olympic-record time of 2:55.39. read more...

Mark Cavendish is a two-time track World Champion and had the most victories of any rider in the peloton in the 2008 season, but he has come to woe in the off-season because, of all things, of a computer game. He was playing a snowboarding game on his Nintendo Wii console when he fell from the board and hurt his calf muscle. "It's a pain, but it's a minor injury in the off-season and not a huge problem," Cavendish told eurosport.uk. The 23-year-old sprinter still plans to join his Team Columbia teammates at a training camp on the island of Mallorca this week, where he will no doubt be the subject of jokes and comments. read more...

The 2008 NCAA D1 Cross Country Championships will be held in Terre Haute, Indiana on Monday, November 24th. The meet will be held on the Indiana State University LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. This will be the 6th out of the past 7 years that the NCAA Championships have been held in Terre Haute. Last year's champions on the men's side were the Oregon Ducks and the Stanford Cardinals on the women's side. read more...

I came across a very interesting study this past week, which is actually a repeat of a study that was first published in 2004, in which simply rinsing the mouth with a glucose-containing drink (like Gatorade for those in the USA, Powerade/Energade for SA) improved performance during a time-trial lasting about one hour.
