My Life Journey as a Survivor
THE FOLLOWING IS BASED ON A TRUE STORY
Hi, my name is Alvin,
After playing basketball during high school, I had major plans for my future. During the year 1997 I became ill, which at first I thought was just a bad could or the flue, even so, I left for work one evening and collapsed unconscious outside the door of my employer. When I came to, I was in the emergency room. The doctors diagnosed me with having extensive food poisoning after eating Terioki chicken for lunch. The doctors gave a shot to treat the infection; unfortunately it was the wrong injection. I began having violent grandmal seizures back to back in the emergency room. When conscious, I told them to please make it stop! They gave me another shot to better control the seizures, but they never treated the initial infection nor were they able to stop the seizures. It wasn’t long before my body went into shock, as I slipped into a coma. Six months or so had passed before regaining consciousness. I under went extensive rehabilitation and physical therapy, while learning how to walk again. They felt my chances of a fully recover were very slim. When no one was around, my nurse, began slapping and spitting in my face, telling me, “you’ll never make it, just look at you, you are just like all the rest, you’ll never amount to anything in your life” as she left the room. As time had passed, it wasn’t long before they felt it was time for me to go home and get used to my surroundings. It was tough. I was still having seizures and the medication made me vary tired and not able to function well.
While at home, glancing through the TV channels on, the Tour De France was taking place. I hadn’t seen nor heard of anything like it in my life. As Mr. Greg Lemond was being interviewed. He spoke of recovering from a car accident, his age, his will, and determination to return to the sport he enjoyed.
Just then, something amazing happened, I decided to completely give up the sport of basketball and pursue cycling, not realizing it was going to help me get better. I didn’t have a bike of my own. I sought out books and magazines on dietary essentials for cyclist and how to build a road race bike, like the ones I saw on TV. I took on little jobs here and there, cleaning windows and washing cars. While building my first Shwinn Prolog Road Time Trial bike from scratch, The frame was dented and rusted it needed a lot of work. After I finished painting and building the bike I soug read more...
