Runner's World - A Brief Chat with Tyson Gay

Monday afternoon in Beijing, Tyson Gay faced about 200 international reporters in the Main Press Center of the Olympic Games, fielding questions from the U.S., England, Germany, France, Japan, China, Australia, Central America, and South America. He answered all with the serious mien and respect that have become his hallmark, breaking into a big smile only when talking about a chance meeting with basketball star Kobe Bryant. Gay last made headlines in late June/early July at the U.S. Olympic Track Trials when he ran a wind-aided 9.68 100 meters, but then fell twisting to the track after pulling his left hamstring in the 200 meters

Tola, Masai win Falmouth Road Race

The first time was a charm for both the men's and women's winners of the 2008 CIGNA Falmouth Road Race. In addition, this year marked the first time that a Masters runner topped the women's field, following her wins in consecutive weekends at the Bix 7-Mile in Davenport, Iowa and the Beach to Beacon 10K in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Edith Masai, age 41, of Kenya crossed the finish line in 37:02 followed by Lyudmila Bitkasheva, age 34, of Russia three seconds later in 37:05.

Continued Improvement Holds Hope For The Future

We start this update with a profound thank you to all of Jenny's friends and supporters. It has been 10 months since Jenny's accident, and the continued interest in her recovery as demonstrated by well wishes, cards, and inquiries along with ongoing donations to Jenny's Make It Happen Fund still feels humbling to our family. Jenny has certainly been and continues to be a wonderful gift in all our lives, and we are grateful on her behalf for your ongoing love, support, and prayers. We extend a special thank you to Alison Wade who compiled and edited "The Runner's Cookbook, Winning Recipes from Some of the World's Best Athletes" this past spring. The book is on sale through www.runnerscookbook.com, and the proceeds are being split evenly between Jenny's Make It Happen Fund and the Ryan Shay Memorial Fund. Ryan Shay, an All-American runner, died suddenly during the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Men's Marathon last November. It is an honor for Jenny to be supported along with the Ryan Shay Memorial Fund through this special project. Jenny and her family are appreciative to all the athletes who donated their favorite recipes for all to enjoy. We also extend a special thank you to the Badgerland Striders who donated one dollar from every entry from the June 25th Superun to the Make It Happen Fund. The running community has been and continues to be some of Jenny's biggest supporters as she works on her recovery. Our heartfelt thanks to all the people involved in these special projects and events and to all who continue to be concerned about Jenny and her recovery.

Would you give your medical information to a race?

The Beach to Beacon is trying something that I haven't seen a lot of to date. They are trying to collect relevant medical data on as many of their runners as they can so that if there is an emergency it will be available to the first responders who are on site.

Track and Field Blogs - Ryan Hall - Pleasure in the Pain

I learned something important about myself on a long run I recently completed a little over a week ago. My older brother, who is functioning as my full time trainer leading up to the Games, and I tried to get up early and beat the heat, however, by the time we started at 8 a.m. the roadside thermator in town already read 80 degrees. The long run route would take me through my local neighborhoods for 3 miles and then around the lake for an additional 15 miles before hitting the dirt road that would lead from my house at 6,700ft to one of my favorite dirt roads in Big Bear, Skyline, which is at nearly 8,000ft. The reason why it is called skyline is easy to understand when you are up on the rim of the world. When I am up there I feel like I am practically apart of the bright blue sky that encompasses me.

Harroufi defends title at 30th Bolder Boulder 10K

Ridouane Harroufi of Morocco burst ahead on the downhill leading to the finish line at Folsom Field to deny an Ethiopian victory in the 10-kilometer Bolder Boulder for the second straight year Monday.

Harroufi, who passed Solomon Tsige to win last year's race, stayed with Dmessew Tsega and Gebo Berka on their torrid pace through a steady drizzle until they approached the stadium, then sprinted past the Ethiopians for a winning time of 28 minutes, 32 seconds, one second ahead of Tsega.

The Peak.com Vermont Ultra Marathon

Runners from across the country are
making their annual trek to Riverside
Farm for what some have described as
the "toughest 50-miler east of the
Mississippi." The Peak.com Ultra
Challenge is a grueling test of endurance
held on the stunning grounds of Riverside
Farms, a popular wedding venue. This
gorgeous location, with its meandering
trails and Green Mountain views, provides
an ideal backdrop for the summer race
scheduled for June 14, 2008.

Athletics: 97TH ING Bay To Breakers Returns On Sunday In San Francisco

Part parade, part fashion show, and part road race, the 97th ING Bay to Breakers returns to the streets of San Francisco on Sunday, and organizers expect some 70,000 runners and walkers (about half of them unregistered) to take part.

Up front, the race is serious business. Elite athlete coordinator Josh Muxen has assembled a strong field to chase a $74,000 prize money purse, including a special $25,000 ING Battle to the Breakers bonus which will be awarded to the first athlete to cross the finish line. That could be a man or it could be a woman; women are given a four minute and 40 second headstart based on the difference between the male (33:42) and female (38:22) course records.

Jen Rhines's Journal

I'm going to let you in on a little known fact. One of the many sports that I competed in as a kid was BMX racing. I had a black and pink Hutch bike and a pink outfit to match. This visual amuses Terrence to no end! Since BMX is now an Olympic sport and they have built a BMX course at the training center in Chula Vista the running joke with Andrew Kastor and Mike McKeeman is that now I can train for both events. Now that's a scary thought!
