Asafa Powell bounced back from his disappointing third place at the world championships on Sunday when he broke his 100-meter world record with a time of 9.74 seconds.

Tyson Gay (USA) won his semi-final race with a time of 10.00. That sets up a showdown with Asafa Powell (JAM), who finished second in his semi-final race to Derrick Atkins (BAH) after virtually jogging to the finish in 10.08. Atkins finished in 10.04.
