"Rankin, a former UCLA All-American, had a lot of success in 2006 and has really improved since making the decision to work with Joaquim Cruz, the 1984 800m gold medalist, and after recovering from several stress fractures that plagued him in 2006. The American distance running aficionados who got up early to watch 2007 world leader Alan Webb's quest for America's first gold in the 1,500 since 1908 likely are re-examining their holdings in Alan Webb's stock and perhaps switching wholeheartedly to compatriot Bernard Lagat after the two semifinals today. With 300 meters to go in both semis, both Lagat and Webb found themselves in the same situation - in the back. And while both Americans ended up moving up in the final 300 of each heat to advance automatically to the final, they did so in totally contrasting styles. read more...

This is the event of the championship for us (and many LetsRun.com visitors - particularly the Americans). The anticipation for this race has been building all summer. In reality though, it's been building for a lot longer than that. Certainly for 20 plus years, as LetsRun.com message board poster Jim Spivey was the last American to medal at Worlds (bronze 1987) and American Steve Scott was the last American 1,500 man to enter Worlds as a favorite for gold (silver in inaugural 1983 World Champs). read more...
