<title>Michael Phelps Named One of GQ's Men of the Year </title>
<description>BALTIMORE, Maryland, November 19. MICHAEL Phelps truly ascended into mainstream greatness this month as he has been named one of GQ's Men of the Year.

Alongside president-elect Barack Obama, superstar actor Leonardo DiCaprio and 2008 Golden Globe winning actor Jon Hamm, Phelps is honored among some of the greats.

Michael Paterniti goes in-depth with Phelps in a feature on GQ's web site during which Phelps talks about some of his past in swimming, but also how he's handling the mainstream spoils of success like friendships with Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher as well as some of his newly-purchased toys.

<title>Phelps wins 100m butterfly thriller to tie Spitz's gold mark</title>
<description>Phelps finished the 100-meter butterfly Saturday morning (Friday night ET) with a half-stroke that looked like a mistake and, on some replays, like a loss, but turned into gold medal No. 7 in his Beijing Olympic collection.

&amp;quot; It's almost too close to see,&amp;quot; Phelps admitted of his winning margin of one-hundredth of a second over Serbia's Milorad Cavic, which sparked a protest and video review but was upheld.

<title>Swimming world records: Meaningless sub-titles in Olympic glory?</title>
<description>Today must have been an 'off-day' for the Beijing Water Cube. &amp;quot;Only&amp;quot; 2 world records was broken in this morning's competitions, those of the 200m Butterfly for women, and the 4 x 200m Freestyle for women. Admittedly, the latter record was smashed, by all of 5.79 seconds, but the rest of the day was something of an anomaly, because of the relative lack of appearance of the letters &amp;quot;WR&amp;quot; alongside a winning time in the Beijing pool

<title>Phelps wins fifth gold in Beijing</title>
<description>BEIJING (AP) -- For Michael Phelps, it's not enough to just set a new standard. He has to demolish the old one.

Winningest Olympian ever? He's two golds past that already and not finished yet, just over halfway to his goal of breaking Mark Spitz's record seven in a single Olympics.

<title>Phelps, Coughlin and Peirsol spark medal run</title>
<description>BEIJING - This time, Michael Phelps made it look easy.
Phelps continued his run toward a record eight Olympic gold medals Tuesday morning (Monday night, Eastern time) with a never-in-doubt victory in the 200-meter freestyle, the only individual event he didn't win at the 2004 Olympics.

      <title>Beijing 2008: Men's 200 m Freestyle : The Michael Phelps show rolls on</title>
<description>In case you did not hear by now, a quick glance at our &amp;quot;Phelps medal counter&amp;quot; in the upper left of the screen will tell you that Michael Phelps has kept his quest for eight medals alive by pummeling the field in the men's 200 m freestyle. Need we mention that he set another world record in doing so? He shaved nearly a second off his own previous record of 1:43.86 and finished nearly two seconds ahead of South Korea's Park Tae-Hwan in lowering the record to 1:42.96. So it was a repeat of sorts when we saw him atop the podium with an official straining to drape the gold medal over Phelps' neck. He again demonstrated his sheer dominance in the freestyle by opening up a half-body length lead after the first lap and continued to pull away from the field on each sucessive leg.

<title>Olympic swimmer Shanteau diagnosed with cancer</title>
<description>ATLANTA (AP) - When Eric Shanteau touched the wall second at the U.S. Olympic trials, he was overcome by the joy of reaching a lifelong goal.
The celebration didn't last long.

Shanteau had barely locked up his trip to Beijing when he was forced to deal with a gut-wrenching choice: Should he have surgery for the testicular cancer hardly anyone knew about? Or, should he put it off for another month so he could swim at his first Olympics?

<title>Coughlin, Peirsol set world records in 100-meter backstroke</title>
<description>As Michael Phelps won the 200-meter freestyle to qualify for his second individual event at the Beijing Olympics, Natalie Coughlin and Aaron Peirsol lowered their own world records to win the women's and men's 100-meter backstroke events.

Six world records have been set at trials after just three days of competition, all by swimmers wearing the new Speedo LZR Racer.

&amp;quot; That's the best heat I've ever been in, better than any Olympics,&amp;quot; Peirsol said of the 100 back final he won in 52.89 seconds, .09 faster than the record he set at the 2007 world championships.

<title>The swimsuit debate continues, as Adidas enters the fray</title>
<description>In the third post of that series, we mentioned that the other swimsuit makers would soon be unleashing their own high-tech designs onto the swimming world. That began with Arena and their Powerskin R-Evolution (right), which has the distinction (for the meantime) of being the only suit other than a Speedo in which a world record has been set this year (by Pelligrini of Italy!).

<title>The Speedo LZR racer: feedback on a developing debate, and the value o</title>
<description>Thanks to all who have commented on yesterday's post, which focused mainly on the newly developed swimsuit by Speedo, the LZR Racer. This suit is making waves in the swimming world, since it has been worn for 9 out of 9 world records in the pool this year! Some coaches believe the issue of fairness needs to be debated, with calls for ethics debates around it.
