EUGENE, Ore. — Nick Symmonds experienced a double fantasy in Monday's 800-meter final. Not only did he win the race with a dramatic kick in the final 100, he was joined on the Olympic team by two friends and fellow Eugene-based runners.
"I dreamed of this," said Symmonds. "I can't believe it. Awesome."
Symmonds finished in 1 minute, 44.10 seconds followed by Andrew Wheating (1:45.03) and Christian Smith (1:45.47). There was drama beyond Smith obtaining the "A" qualifying standard (1:46.00) needed to make the team for Beijing.

With a 4.1 meters-per-second wind behind him, the world 100 and 200m champion ran the fastest 100 meters ever by a human being, 9.68, to win the men's 100m Olympic Trials title. Moments after Gay crossed the line, the flags at Hayward Field fell still, leaving observers to wonder what a slightly more tame, and legal, breeze would have resulted in.

As Michael Phelps won the 200-meter freestyle to qualify for his second individual event at the Beijing Olympics, Natalie Coughlin and Aaron Peirsol lowered their own world records to win the women's and men's 100-meter backstroke events.
Six world records have been set at trials after just three days of competition, all by swimmers wearing the new Speedo LZR Racer.
"That's the best heat I've ever been in, better than any Olympics," Peirsol said of the 100 back final he won in 52.89 seconds, .09 faster than the record he set at the 2007 world championships.
