Carlos Sastre wins the Tour de France!

Carlos Sastre started with a lead of 1:34 over Cadel Evans, and most thought he'd lose it to the better time-trialling Australian. But Sastre held firm, did the ride of his life, and has won the Tour de France, barring disaster on the road into Paris tomorrow. Of course, anything can still happen, but only bad luck or trouble will deny the Spanish their third consecutive champion!

Sastre in yellow: But Evans is in range

Fascinating day's racing in the Tour de France yesterday, as the riders tackled what is arguably the race's toughest day - 209km including three out of category climbs, culminating in the most famous climb in cycling, Alp d'Huez.

And as expected, the attacks started early on the final climb, as the climbers were forced to go out looking for time on Cadel Evans, knowing that they required a buffer leading into the final 53km time-trial on Saturday.

Hincapie gives direction to upstart riders

George Hincapie is the only cyclist to race on eight Tour de France-winning teams. This year he passed on the chance for No. 9, which turned out to be a smart decision.

The tall, affable New Yorker was a key player in all seven of Lance Armstrong's Tour wins and supported Alberto Contador in the Spaniard's 2007 victory.

Schumacher In Yellow

Australia's Cadel Evans struck a first blow to Alejandro Valverde at the Tour de France Tuesday after leaving his yellow jersey rival trailing on the fourth stage time trial.

Germany's Stefan Schumacher of the Gerolsteiner team stunned the pre-race favorites to win the 29.5km race against the clock in a time of 35min 44sec.

What Happened, Fab?

Despite expectations, Fabian Cancellara failed to win the stage 4 time trial at the 2008 Tour de France

Cholet, France:

Wait a minute. What's wrong with this picture? According to nearly every specialist, bet-taker and bet-maker at this year's Tour de France, Fabian Cancellara was programmed to win the stage four time trial in Cholet on Tuesday. It was a moot point, a done deal. So why did he only finish fifth, more than 30 seconds behind Stefan Schumacher?

Old World Attitudes Costly to Valverde

Alejandro Valverde is an easy guy to root for. He has a personality, he's daring and aggressive in road races, and he wins some big races. But he's also frustrating to watch, especially in time trials. He, and the people around him, haven't seemed to fully accept the fact that attention to detail is what wins the Tour de France, and he gave away valuable time in today's time trial because of Old World attitudes.

Valverde victorious in opening stage of Tour de France

PLUMELEC, France (AP) - Alejandro Valverde is determined to contend for the Tour de France title. And the Tour de France is determined to run a clean race.
The Spaniard won the opening stage in a final sprint Saturday as cycling's three-week showcase took a first step in trying to get beyond the doping scandals that for years have battered the race and the entire sport.

Valverde Takes Lead

Tour de France organizers tried everything to make the start of this year's Tour unlike any other in modern history. And by eliminating the prologue as well as time bonuses, stage one of this year's race promised to take on new meaning. The fact that it skirted through the sinuous and narrow country roads of Brittany seemed to assure particularly nervous racing from the get-go of the 2008 Tour de France.

Valverde seizes the yellow

On the opening stage of the Tour de France, Spanish champion Alejandro Valverde displayed the kind of riding which won him three Ardennes Classics in recent years, gave him his second career Tour stage win and, most importantly, the first yellow jersey of the Tour. With that feat, the Caisse d'Epargne rider gave a seamless transition of the yellow jersey from one Spaniard, last year's winner Alberto Contador, to another.
