INDIANAPOLIS - German Fernandez has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after placing 11th Saturday at the 37th IAAF World Cross Country Championships held at the Al Bisharat Golf Course in Amman, Jordan. A two-time U.S. Junior Cross Country champion, Fernandez led Team USA with an 11th-place finish in the junior men's 8 km, running 24 minutes 13 seconds. He was the first non-African across the line and helped lead the junior men's team to a fifth place finish. (more)

The honor, given by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, comes on the heels of the Lady Volunteers second NCAA indoor track and field championship. BALTANAS, Spain (AP) - Lance Armstrong has broken his collarbone in a crash during a five-day race in Spain. Astana team leader Johan Bruyneel says on his Twitter feed that it was a clean fracture without complications. He adds that the seven-time Tour de France champion should make a fast recovery. Armstrong crashed Monday during a pileup in the first stage of the Vuelta of Castilla and Leon race. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance. (more)

Unfortunately we weren't able to see German compete this past weekend at NCAAs as he gets ready for World Cross, but we were able to round up the video of his 3:55.02 collegiate record setting mile. Its pretty amazing to watch him do this all alone! With this performance German also broke his own Junior World Record in the mile that he set earlier in the year (Video of 3:56).Congrats to German and Coach Dave Smith, we look forward to seeing them on the track this spring!
