Optimal Training: The ten most impressive performances of the weekend
It just doesn't get any better than this weekend for distance running fans.  With the USA Cross Country Championships, the Reebok Boston Indoor Games, and the Sparkassen Cup in Stuttgart, we were treated to some insane performances.  Here are my rankings for the best performances of the weekend (US only), with a little commentary mixed in. 1. On Saturday evening at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games at the Reggie Lewis Center, Shalane Flanagan ran 14:47.62 for 5,000 meters, setting a new American Record for that event indoors. Flanagan lowered Marla Runyan's 2001 record of 15:07.33 by nearly 20 seconds and became the fifth-fastest woman of all time in that event, just .005 seconds behind the winner of Saturday's race, Ethiopian Sentayehu Ejigu. Shalane Flanagan's career begins a new chapter in Boston on Saturday
Coming off of the best year of her career, Olympic 10,000m bronze medalist Shalane Flanagan will run into uncharted territory at Saturday's Reebok Boston Indoor Games, her opening effort of the 2009 season.
