Asian Marks Fall At China Nationals
Two Asian records were broken at the Chinese national championships that ended on Monday evening at the Olympic Water Cube in Beijing. Most of China's top swimmers were absent, away preparing for the National Games of China in October. According to term papers online, the Beijing meet presented a mixed picture when it came to shiny suits or not: some haves wore them, some have nots did not. (more)

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Michael Phelps broke the world record in the 100-meter butterfly at the U.S. national championships Thursday, just two months after returning from a suspension that was part of the longest layoff of his career. The 14-time Olympic gold medalist swam the two-lap final in 50.22 seconds at the Indiana University Natatorium. He lowered Ian Crocker's mark of 50.40 set at the 2005 world championships in Montreal (more)

Michael Phelps removed his goggles, tore off the two caps he was wearing, tossed them on the deck and turned around to check the scoreboard. He scowled upon seeing the time in yellow lights next to his name. As expected, the 14-time Olympic gold medalist racked up his second victory of the night at the U.S. national championships Wednesday. It just wasn't up to his exacting standards. (more)

Phelps was arrested and convicted for driving under the influence of alcohol shortly after he tied Mark Spitz's record by winning six Olympic gold medals in the 2004 Athens Olympics. He apologised then and stated that he would have to live with this for the rest of his life and that he would have to learn from his mistake. Apparently he has not learnt from his mistake and he wasn't living with it. He had apparently considered himself fortunate to have "gotten away" with having suffered no real damage... (more)

Michael Phelps could face criminal charges as part of the fallout from a photo of him inhaling from a marijuana pipe at a house party. Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott told The State newspaper of Columbia, S.C., that he would file charges against Phelps if he determines the swimmer smoked marijuana in the county. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (AFP) - American swimmer Emily Brunemann has been slapped with a six-month suspension after testing positive for a banned substance, the United States Anti-doping Agency announced Wednesday. The 22-year-old Brunemann, a four-time NCAA All-American, was caught using banned drugs hydrochlorothiazide and triamterene. The two are considered masking agents and are listed on the World Anti-doping Agency Prohibited List. (more)

That was a bit of news from Michael Phelps a little while ago on a conference call to discuss his selection as the USOC's SportsMan of the year. But the sound bite should be qualified. He said that he would not swim eight events again at "a major competition." Of course, the definition of major events would be anything that matters, as in the Olympics and World Championships.
